History tells us that there was originally a large reservoir at the present site of Hatirjheel Lake, and at Jigatala, where Pilkhana is now located, there was a Hatishala for keeping the elephants of Bhawal Raja. Hatishala used to have a herd of elephants and Bhawal Raja used to bring these elephants to this reservoir for bathing through Hathirpool and Elephant Road. It means that elephants used to bathe in this reservoir at that time, hence its name Elephant Jheel. The lake was connected to the Shitalakshya river through the Balu river, which was becoming a closed water body over time, later the lake was revived through the Hatirjheel park.
